Aphmau is the main protagonist of Heart Point. She is a junior at Heart Point Academy who is put under the effect of an insight spell attached to a heart sticker on her face. Using this power, she can see how people feel about her (aside from Beatrice, who placed it on her) represented by hearts for romantic feelings, and stars for platonic feelings.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Aphmau's life before attending Heart Point Academy, besides the fact that she seems to have a good relationship with her mom, and that she attended the same middle school as Nakano.
Before the series starts, she was dating Vance. He dumped her at the very start for Cassidy, and it's not clear how long they were dating beforehand. While still grieving the breakup, she receives the power of insight from Beatrice that allows her to see people's feelings towards her. She sees that Cyrus has a full heart meter for her, and chases after Beatrice for answers. Not getting any, she again avoids confronting her feelings by moping on the roof. Here she meets Ryo Nakano, a punk senior that also likes to mope in that spot, and manages to gain a heart with him.
She finds out soon after (in "He Confesses...?",) that Cassidy plans to become prom queen with Vance as prom king. This only makes the breakup hurt worse for her, because she was extremely looking forward to going to prom. Cyrus tries to comfort her, but she reveals to him that she knows he has feelings for her, and they kiss to test the waters. She watches him lose a heart for her, and finds out that their friendship having been so long has made the idea of a relationship a bit awkward. Ryo warns her that rebounds never work out, but Aphmau accepts the offer of a date from Cyrus anyway.
They go to an escape room for their date, and have an easy time figuring it out, but Cyrus loses another heart and gains a star while they're there. Aphmau even tries to let him initiate something before he drops her off at her dorm, but he does nothing and walks away. She's instead invited to sneak out after curfew with himself and a friend by Ryo, a message relayed to her by Theo. She hesitantly accepts.
Ryo takes Aph (and Beatrice, his best friend,) night swimming, wherein they break into the school's pool and goof around. She declines swimming, and they have a close call with a campus guard. Aphmau and Ryo narrowly escape, having been left to fend for themselves by Beatrice, and share a short moment on the roof where they met. After being briefly interrupted by Beatrice, Aphmau is asked out, this time by Ryo instead. She declines, since she's already giving Cyrus a chance. She gains a star, and another heart with him.
When Theo asks her about her turning down Ryo, she vents about knowing Cyrus doesn't really want a relationship with her like he thought he did, and decides to end things with him at Theo's suggestion. She's then approached by Vance, who apologizes profusely for what he did to her. He asks to be friends, which she declines- but she still comforts him and gives him a sticker. Unbeknownst to her, this makes her gain a heart with him.
She breaks up with Cyrus in the same spot Vance broke up with her, and though it breaks his heart (including the ones on his meter,) he understands and says he only needs some time alone. Aphmau overhears Cassidy and Vance's breakup across the cafe. Once she tells Ryo about what happened, she asks him on a date, which he accepts.
This infuriates Nakano, and endangers their friendship. Even though Theo supports her, Aphmau feels awful for having not told Nakano anything about her and Ryo before asking him out. She tells him about what happened, and even though he reassures her it won't affect him and his sibling's relationship, she still seems worried. She bites the bullet and asks him to prom, and he laughs at her. Once he realizes it isn't a joke he declines, and asks her if it's okay that they don't go to prom together.
He continues to ask her as the days go by, but she always lies and says that it's absolutely, one-hundred percent fine. Theo is the only one to get the truth out of her- that she's devastated, having been looking forward to prom. She tries to explain the heart meters she's seeing to Theo, but it's spun into a metaphor as if it isn't literally what she sees. Vance interrupts and tries to apologize, gifting Aphmau some stickers. She then goes to the track field to apologize to Nakano.
She witnesses Vance and Nakano fighting over what's practically nothing, and breaks them up. Vance tells her that he broke things off with Cassidy for her, and the fight between him and Nakano starts to escalate again. Aph stops them by sticking one of the stickers she was gifted to Nakano's face. While they're confused at first, it combined with Aphmau's apology rekindles their friendship. She then talks to Vance, telling him she doesn't hate him but that they can't be friends or have a relationship, sticking a sticker to his face too.
On her way back to her dorm, she finds Cyrus asking her to prom at the door, with a huge sign and everything. ..Except he wasn't asking her, he was asking Theo, who was with her. They leave to talk over prom plans at dinner, leaving Aphmau with a bittersweet feeling. When she goes into the dorm alone, she finds that her mom has sent her a package... and it's a prom dress, since she never told her mom that her and Vance wouldn't be going to prom anymore. She nearly begins to cry, holding it in to go mope at the school fountain instead.
When she gets there, Cassidy is already there, and Beatrice appears as well (though she's not there to mope). They both listen to Cass vent about her prom plans having fallen through, and Aph hypes her up to the point she decides to become 'prom dictator', and runs off having gained a star. Bea tells Aphmau about how often Ryo has been talking about her, and asks about how their relationship has been. She starts to reply until she spots Ryo in the distance, spying on their conversation, and runs after him.
Aphmau flags him down, and immediately insists that she's completely okay with not going to prom when she's asked. He doesn't believe her, but this time she continues to persist- saying that Beatrice also doesn't like prom, and that Cassidy probably isn't going, and it probably isn't as important as she once thought it to be. After she says she's really happy he likes her, he tells her Beatrice told him that she was worried about him finding her silly. Once she argues she's not silly, he tells her that if she's so serious now, then she won't mind him burning the two 'silly little prom tickets' he bought- in an act of anti-establishmentism. He holds them high above her head until she admits she's silly, and then hands them over, telling her he loves her for her silliness. She immediately calls him out for saying it, and she says she'll get him next time he says it.
When prom comes around, Theo and Aphmau get dressed together in their dorm. Cyrus comes by and picks up Theo, leaving Aphmau to wait for Ryo. She waits for hours, until it's dark out and she doesn't think she's coming, until he finally knocks on her door. She's cross with him for being so late, but notices that he seems.. stiff, and nervous. They leave together, arriving late but arriving nonetheless. Theo and Cyrus come over and start to chat with Aphmau, before she leaves them to talk more about their relationship. She asks Ryo to dance, but turns and finds that he's gone.
Aphmau searches the entire school for him, finding him catching his breath against a locker. She stays when he insists she should go back to her friends, and discovers he has issues with anxiety. She doesn't let him feel as if he's ruined her night, opting to stay with him and forget the prom in the gym. Aph points out that they can still hear the music from the prom, and they dance together to it in the hall. They kiss, all the hearts in Ryo's meter filling and turning gold. The gift of insight glitches out and fades from her vision, showing her she's won both Ryo's heart, and the game. She pulls him in again, content.
Appearance[]
Aphmau is often seen in the school's uniform with a purple vest, a matching skirt, and a pink tie. She wears a wide assortment of stickers, though for most of the series she only has the purple heart sticker associated with the insight spell (gifted to her by Beatrice.) She has short black hair and brown eyes.
Her casual outfit is a purple off-the-shoulder top with lighter frills on the top and bottom, with a white flower design. She wears a necklace with a blue and purple winged jewel, a light skirt, and strapped shoes.
To the prom, she wears a long purple dress with no sleeves, and a choker to match.
Personality[]
Aphmau is shown to be very kind and upbeat, though very naive as well- to the point that multiple other characters refer to her as childish and sometimes even just 'a child'. She's self-conscious of this, and worries about the person she's interested in thinking she's silly, or dumb. She has a tendency to hide her feelings, even from her closest friends, and puts other people's needs over her own on multiple occasions. Overall she's a very considerate person, and forgoes her original choice a few times throughout the series for the happiness of others.
