Garroth is the captain of a pirate ship, and a main character in Mermaid Tales.
Biography[]
Before the series, Garroth worked with Aaron on multiple occasions. He made a deal with Prince Travis to find The Heart of The Sea, which he found on the island of Kanko after losing many of his crew, and started sailing back towards port to bring it to him.
He first appears in "The Heart of The Sea", on his ship already celebrating the return of the diamond to the prince. The mercenary he hired (Aaron) butts in to tell his crew that the gem is worthless, but he rectifies it by having Alfredo thrown in a cell for asking so many questions about it. After chatting with Aaron, the boat is suddenly thrown around (unbeknownst to him, by Titanus ramming it,) and he drops the diamond into the ocean. He quickly dives in after it without thinking.
Garroth finds the diamond on the sea floor, but faints when he meets Titanus face to face. Luckily Aaron brings him to the surface. Garroth drops the heart again somehow on his way up, but decides it's no longer worth it. He's shocked when Aaron dives back under to save a woman he allegedly saw, calling him crazy when he surfaces again. Regretfully, he sets sail for shore without the diamond.
When he exits his ship, he finds Nana~Chan waiting for him and immediately begins to harass her until he's slapped across the face by Amber for speaking to a woman that way. He becomes nervous when Nana~Chan asks for the crystal heart, and the two women take him to tell Prince Travis he came back empty-handed. He laughs at Aaron when he's slapped by a maiden he 'seduced' and then 'left behind'.
Before the prince he tries to explain, but Travis orders his ship be seized. He quickly tries to arrange another deal, in which Garroth helps the prince with his search for a suitor. He proposes that he find a maiden who will love Travis for .. well, Travis, and he agrees to the second deal- on the condition that this time, his punishment is the loss of his life instead of just his ship. He offers Aaron 1/5 of the reward if he helps him.
Garroth and Aaron sit in the tavern interviewing maidens to see who might be a suitable fit for the deal with the prince. Aaron goes for a walk to clear his head after several failed attempts and saves Michi- some time while he's doing so Garroth finds them and asks if he can buy her a drink.
They start to interview Michi, asking her if she'll date their 'very dumb' and 'very ugly' friend- and she accepts, on the condition she can go on a date with Aaron if things don't work out. Garroth agrees to it immediately, and moves his ship to a cove on the side of the island. He throws a celebration with his crew, putting all the ale on Aaron's tab. After a bit of contemplation he decides to get Michi in on the deal so he can get more of a reward, and sends Alfredo (with another crewmate) out to fetch Aaron.
When Aaron returns, Garroth immediately becomes curious about Aphmau and demands she come out from behind him, where she's hiding. He gets the wrong idea when he realizes she's naked save Aaron's jacket, and he takes the pair below deck to get her some real clothes. He harasses Aphmau, and discusses a plan to extort Travis for more money with Aaron. Though he refuses to join in, Garroth is fine with it- more gold for him. He's called away for a visitor, and he's shocked to find Prince Travis already waiting on his ship for his date.
He improvises and says the date is still getting ready, then goes below deck to convince Aphmau to do the date for him on short notice. She agrees only if she can have some of his hair, and he cuts off a lock from his bangs to prove he means it. He gives her a dress to change into. then comes back to get her when the table is set.
Travis tries to suggest they go out on the town, but Garroth again improvises and says he planned for the date to be on the ship. Alfredo (after being thrown off the ship) tells him he can cook, and he's made the crew's chef for the evening. Garroth becomes impatient- scolding Aaron for not helping Aph, and pressuring him into doing anything to get her back to the date when she runs off crying.
He's locked out of the room they're in and becomes angry, wanting her to hurry so they can get it over with. Eventually he busts down the door, and assumes the wrong thing when he sees Aphmau's dress is torn. He brings her back out to the date, where everything is going fine until Travis is pulled into the ocean by Teony. Garroth dives into the water to save him, telling him he has sea-crazies when he thinks he saw a mermaid. However, the date is off again as Aphmau and Aaron disappear- much to his despair.
While trying to keep Travis calm, Amber appears on his ship. Garroth argues with her until she throws him off his own ship. When he finally manages to climb back on and tries to kick her off, she throws him once more. He later tries to convince Travis that Amber is ruining his date by being overbearing, and that holding hands is not something scandalous. He suggests he should've kissed a maiden he fancied in the past- on the lips. He causes Amber to faint when he lies and says he's had 23 girlfriends at the same time.
Aaron pulls him aside to tell him that the date is a bad idea, but Garroth brushes it off and it continues. Him and Amber snoop on the date from afar, and he becomes impatient waiting for them to kiss or do something. When Travis finally makes a move he holds Amber back from intervening, but is just as shocked as anyone else when Aphmau's too dense to understand. He later laughs at Aphmau when she throws up from eating seafood, but becomes furious when he realizes she's thrown up on his ship. He takes Travis and Amber below deck so that Travis can change out of his clothes, since he got vomit on them.
He acts strangely when Katelyn and Teony are brought onboard, trying to get everyone off his ship very quickly. It's revealed why when Redbeard appears and tells everyone Garroth tipped him off to the prince being on his ship. However, when Garroth asks for his reward.. he's tied up alongside everyone else and left to burn with his ship.
Once everyone is safely off the ship thanks to Aphmau, Amber immediately punches him. When she leaves, Aaron punches him instead. He's threatened by Travis into helping rescue the two mermaids, and accompanies Travis to one of Redbeard's ships. They successfully take out the three people guarding the ship, but are ambushed while they're unlocking Teony's cage. Luckily Amber shows with the village guard and tells them to go help Aaron instead. Garroth assists in killing the two pirates that had been with Redbeard, and they free the mermaids.
On the beach, he's shocked that Aphmau is also a mermaid and asks Amber if she is too- earning a slap. He becomes annoyed when Katelyn can't pronounce his name correctly, and watches the mermaids leave with everyone else. It's unknown what happened to him during or after the three month timeskip.
Appearance[]
Garroth has light blonde hair, and bright cyan eyes. He's only seen in his captain's attire, consisting of a navy blue coat with golden epaulets. Underneath, he wears a light blue shirt, dark gray pants, and brown boots.
In "Love At First Sight", he cuts his hair to give some to Aphmau.
Personality[]
Garroth is a very perverted and dishonest pirate captain. He's shown to be quite uncaring of anyone but himself- he repeatedly has Alfredo punished for very little, he insults Aphmau constantly and disregards her being sick, and he plans to extort the prince for his money. He harasses women on multiple occasions, and most of the cast are uncomfortable around him at best. Overall he's a very untrustworthy person, who will use people around him for his own gain- like he did Aphmau, Aaron, and Travis.
Episode Appearances[]
Trivia[]
- He seems to be based upon most pirate stereotypes- he is perverted, loud, and has a love for alcohol.
- He is one of only two pirate captains shown in the series, alongside Redbeard.
