Garroth Ro'Meave is the deuteragonist of Minecraft Diaries: The Rise Of Phoenix Drop and Minecraft Diaries: The Realm Protector, and a main character in Minecraft Diaries: War Of The Magi.

Personality[]

Garroth is a chivalrous, loyal man of the people he dedicates himself to. Initally, he comes off as serious and reserved and tends to only address guard matters early on in the series. When his face is eventually revealed, Aphmau is shocked to learn of how young he appears in contrast with his mature social appearance. Though, even with this stern outlook, his soft spot shines through with various interactions over the course of Season 1 that display his care, love, and a strong desire to protect those he is sworn to.

However, Garroth is weak to his emotions; he became depressed and withdrawn for several days after witnessing Laurance kissing Aphmau, and expressed great concern for Zenix's whereabouts and safety even after he had betrayed Phoenix Drop and attacked Garroth and Aphmau. After Zenix disappeared, Garroth went through an extended period of grief, holding onto Zenix's old belongings[1], up until Laurance challenged him and taunted his attachment to his former apprentice[2]. Garroth later expresses his shame of aiding Zenix in learning combat that would later be used against him and others, and Laurance tells Aphmau that Garroth’s emotional attachment to Zenix could be his downfall.

Despite Garroth’s loyalty, he is prone to giving in to jealousy, going as far to join Zane in the Jury of Nine and betray his village once he believed to have witnessed Laurance discarding his trust by kissing Aphmau. After Laurance talked sense into him, Garroth sacrificed himself by staying behind in the Irene Dimension to fend off Zane so the can others escape.

After Garroth’s time in the Irene Dimension, he began to break down the emotional barriers he held that led him to betray Phoenix Drop in the first place. During Season 2, Garroth is seen to be more open to casual conversation, unlike his much stricter personality from Season 1. He is also shown to be sentimental and reckless, risking the spy mission in O’khasis with Aphmau and Katelyn to visit his imprisoned mother, despite knowing that she was okay. He later apologizes for his behavior after being criticized, recognizing that it was an inappropriate time to do such a thing. He struggles with making rational decisions in the moment, tending to act upon his feelings.

Upon learning of Aphmau's pregnancy while dealing with the capture of his own family, Garroth scolded Aphmau out of rage. Jess stated she regrets writing that scene, explaining that it was out of character and a projection of her own emotions towards the fandom at the time, and that it was rushed and forced.[3] However, after some time to cool down, Garroth promised Aphmau that he would stick by her side no matter who she loved, and went on to help care for and love her children just as his own.

Garroth has his occasional prideful moments. Being a man of former nobility, he did not want to wear second-hand clothes given to him while on a spy mission in O'Khasis. During the militaristic occupation of Tu'la on his home, Garroth grew distrustful of anyone from the region, such as Aphmau's new guard from Tu’La, Liochant. Though, after getting to spend time with Liochant, Garroth began to change his previous views of Liochant and went as far as to say he would trust Aphmau’s children in no greater hands than his - besides his own, he jokingly added.

Appearance[]

Garroth is a fairly tanned man with cyan colored eyes. He has pale blonde hair with bangs flowing to the right side of his forehead. In the majority of Season 1, he wears a silver chain mail armor set, with a black cross on his chest plate. The cross is believed to be the O'khasis crest, as almost everyone in the Ro'Meave family wears a black cross. Along with his armor set, he also wears a helm that covers his entire head and face. We see Garroth's face for the first time in Season 1, Episode 37, aptly titled "Garroth's Face".

Towards the finale of Season 1, he receives brown chain mail armor with a blue cape, which he designed himself in the past. This was given as a gift from Katelyn. In Season 2, he is seen wearing the same set of armor.

In his Jury of Nine form he grows in size and gets a full set of iron armor. There is a blue feather coming out from the top of his helm, and in the center of his armor is the same black cross as on Zane's clothes. When he snaps out of his trance, the armor is the same, but his face is a bit more faded, and he emits a blue particles aura.

In Season 2 Ep 82 he is shown wearing a blue shirt and jeans. It also seems like he is wearing dark brown shoes.

As of Season 2 Ep 87, Garroth wears an O'khasian armor set consisting of black chainmail and silver armor with the exception of a blue chestplate with the black Ok'hasis cross. He also wears a silver helm, however after he removes it to reveal his identity to Zianna, he never wears it again.

In Season 2 Episode 92, it is revealed Garroth has a new form, later revealed to be a relic form from the Ro'meave relic which is highly likely Edmund the Protector's relic, consisting of blue armor and orange gauntlets and boots. His hair also become more gold, his sword increases in size, and he emits a gold aura.

In the Minecraft Diaries Side Stories, Garroth wears a white undershirt, a blue plaid jacket, and blue jeans.

Etymology[]

  • The name Garroth is a variant spelling of the name Gareth, a Welsh name based off of Gahariet, a French name of unknown meaning. It may ultimately have a Welsh origin, possibly related to the word "gwaredd" meaning "gentleness". It is also the name of one of the Knights of the Round Table in Arthurian legend. The knight was the youngest son of King Lot and of Morgause, the half-sister of King Arthur, thus making him Arthur's nephew, as well as brother to Gawain, Agravain, Gaheris, and half-brother to Mordred.
    • Whether it is intentional or not, it should also be noted that Zane's personality is very much like those of Agravain and Mordred, while Vylad is similar in personality to Gaheris. It may also be a coincidence that Aphmau is similar in personality to that of Lyonesse, the woman with whom Gareth falls in love with and marries in the legends.
  • The surname Ro'Meave was likely inspired by Ro'Maeve, a location in the game Final Fantasy XI. The name Meave itself is an feminine Irish name meaning "Joy", and is loosely connected to the Irish name Maeve, derived from the traditional Irish name "Méadhbh", meaning "She who intoxicates". It is rooted in the Irish legend of Queen Maeve, one of the main protagonists of the early Irish legend Táin Bó Cúailnge.

Trivia[]

  • Brendan said in a Side Story that Garroth resembles Buttershy from My Little Horsies, a parody of the character Fluttershy from the show My Little Pony. This may be because Garroth is shy but kind hearted, similarly to the character.
  • Garroth's name is pronounced as he says it, "Gare-roth", but most other characters pronounce it differently.
  • Garroth was last seen in the dream dimension in Season 2 Episode 77, Promise but Travis says a theory that she might only be able to see him when she needs his advice at most.
  • In honor of Garroth, Aaron gave Lillith the middle name, "Garnet".
  • The voice actor says he uses a smoother voice when he voice acts for Garroth in Diaries.
  • Garroth is older than Aphmau, specifically by one year.[Citation Needed]
  • Garroth is a few inches taller than Zane.[4]
  • His original Minecraft skin design, prior to the face reveal, is the White_knight skin from the CustomNPCs mod.
