Nakano is one of Aphmau's closest friends in Heart Point and is Ryo's younger sibling. They are known for their athleticism and loyalty.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Nakano's life prior to attending Heart Point Academy besides them having gone to the same middle school as Aphmau. According to Ryo, they started to go by 'Nakano' (their last name) at some point when they were young.
When Vance breaks up with Aphmau, Nakano is sent to fetch things to comfort her by Theo. They bring tissues, but don't have the time to bring ice cream, as they have track practice. They reassure Aph that she's perfect the way she is, and swear to 'smoke Vance on the track' for Aphmau's honor instead. And when Aphmau passes out from having received the gift of insight they're there again, fretting over her when she wakes up. They worry about her being tired, and confusedly tell Aph to knock it off when she starts to talk about... hearts and stars. They continue to ask questions about Aphmau's situation up until they're left shocked and confused alongside Theo and Cyrus when she suddenly disappears.
They look for her for hours with Theo, finding her later on when they hear her yelling from the rooftops on campus about how she's going to get a new boyfriend, and they both rush to go get her.
At track practice, they see the announcement by Cassidy that her and Vance will be running for prom queen and king, and they relay this information to Theo as quickly as possible. They tell her to keep her voice down, as they don't want Aphmau to find out and be crushed. They're upset to see that she already found out on her own and has been acting differently all morning since the announcement was made.
Nakano later hears from Theo that Cyrus and Aphmau have kissed, and are going on a date that afternoon. They scold Aphmau for not thinking it through more before making a move on him, but seems to support her regardless. They're a bit disappointed to have not been told though. When Cyrus finally comes by and asks Aph on the date, Nakano and Theo threaten him that if he breaks her heart, they'll destroy him. They both feign unconditional support, but when they leave for their date, Theo immediately asks if they're snooping on the date, to which Nakano immediately agrees.
During their snooping on Aphmau and Cyrus' date, Theo and Nakano climb through a window and into another escape room. They're accidentally locked inside and discover it to be a horror themed room, which Theo is absolutely awful with. While Nakano tries to solve the puzzles so that they can leave, Theo lies on the floor without helping much. They eventually succumb to lying on the floor with her to wait out the remaining hour until the door automatically unlocks.
They aren't seen again until Aphmau agrees to go on a date with Ryo, which they're infuriated at. They chew out Aphmau for breaking 'the one universal, cross-dimensional rule' of friendship and dating their brother. It being behind their back only rubbed salt in the wound and made things worse. They angrily race off despite Aphmau calling for them, too upset to talk any further.
When Aphmau does get the chance to apologize to them, they're found arguing with Vance on the track field. Vance had run into their lane and stood in front of them because they apparently started the race 'a whole two seconds' earlier than they were meant to. Nakano laughs it off, saying that anyone else would've noticed- and it doesn't matter anyway, because it's practice, and they're on the same team. Aphmau breaks them up, but Nakano quickly becomes aggravated again when Vance reveals that he broke up with Cassidy for her, and begs Aphmau to not even entertain the idea 'for the sake of what's left of our friendship'.
They're stopped in their tracks when Aphmau sticks.. a sticker to their face. She says it's because Nakano said there was something left of their friendship, which made her happy. Unable to resist the cuteness and hopelessness, Nakano forgives her, and they accept her full apology. For a moment, they gain a heart, but they tell themselves they aren't in middle school anymore and calm down, causing it to disappear. They promise Aph that if Ryo breaks her heart, they'll beat him up for her.
At the prom, Nakano is mostly by themselves until Beatrice appears next to them. Even in prom photos they're by themselves, until, again, Beatrice appears and takes photos with them. According to Theo, they were dancing at some point, and pretty well, too. After Aphmau wins the game, Nakano is seen approaching Beatrice with drinks for the both of them. Or, if Bea declined, two drinks for themselves. Beatrice asks them if they want to play a game since they've been having a tough time, which they quickly decline. Instead, they opt to just.. hang out with Beatrice, in her general proximity, something she seems to appreciate.
Appearance[]
Nakano is often seen in the school uniform. They wear a light blue vest, with their track shorts underneath, and blue shoes. They have short-cut black hair, grey eyes, and are always seen with a band-aid somewhere on them- usually their cheek and knee. During track practice they substitute the uniform for an orange top with the school crest on it.
To prom, they wear a short, wide-strapped orange dress, with strapped shoes to match.
Personality[]
Nakano leans into the 'straight-man' archetype, often the serious alternative to Aph and Theo's goofy antics. But they also have a bit of a mischievous side of their own, shown in how quickly they plotted to snoop on their friends' date. They're referred to by just about everyone as athletic. They can be a bit of a no-fun-allowed type sometimes, shown in Ryo's nickname for them. Overall they're fiercely loyal, willing to fight anyone and anything for their friends- and they have the strength to back it up.

- When Aphmau gains insight, Nakano's meter shows one heart, and three stars. In "FACE OFF!", when Nakano briefly gains a second heart, they say they're 'not in middle school anymore', implying Nakano had a crush on Aphmau in middle school that still lingers in the present time.
- Nakano's gender is listed as 'N/A' on their profile, making them not just non-binary, but the first non-binary character in an Aphmau series.
- Nakano is the only character in the series who has enough control over their emotions to seemingly change their meter with no outside influence.
- Their surname 'Nakano' can be written in kanji as 中野, or 仲野. In "中野", 中 (Naka) means 'middle', 'center', or 'inside'. In "仲野", 仲 (Naka) means 'relationship'. While in both, 野 (no) means 'plains', 'rustic', or 'civilian life'.
