Redbeard is a vicious pirate captain and the secondary antagonist in 'Mermaid Tales'.
Appearance[]
Redbeard had bright red hair, a matching beard that gave him his name, and bright green eyes. He wore a red coat with twin tailcoats and gold trim, along with black gloves, tan pants, and black boots with gold trim.
Personality[]
Redbeard was a cruel and wicked pirate who loved money and treasure. His crew members were known to commit crimes, and he would not hesitate to use violence against anyone who disobeyed him. Redbeard was so obsessed with riches that he even betrayed Garroth to reduce future competition.
When Redbeard discovered that he could sell mermaids for a lot of money, he immediately changed his strategy and began to market them. He was not afraid to harm his crew, and he did not feel bad about killing anyone who could get in the way of his plans or be a potential witness.
Biography[]
He first appeared in "Mermaids ARE REAL!", after receiving a tip from Captain Garroth that Prince Travis was on his ship. He arrives with his rather large crew surrounding the ship, planning to kidnap the prince and use him for a hefty ransom. Redbeard orders his crew to take the prince, and a fight breaks out. He then adds that they should take the women onboard too, but his plan is cut short when Teony accidentally reveals herself and Katelyn to be mermaids.
Redbeard immediately changes his tune and orders his men to capture the mermaids. When Amber tries to defend them, he mocks her and reveals to everyone that she used to be a part of his crew. Though she's ashamed, he gets tired of the talk and tells his crew to attack. Aaron, Amber, and Travis are all knocked down and restrained, while Aph, Katelyn and Teony are brought to cages on the shore.
Garroth tries to collect his reward for the tip, but Redbeard has him tied up too, wanting less competition for treasure. He also reveals that he had Garroth's crew stage a mass mutiny in exchange for their lives. He sets the boat on fire, and leaves everyone there to burn.
On the shore, Katelyn and Teony are in cages. but Aph is missing. Redbeard questions one of his crew members (who is now wearing a flower crown) who tells him that they just let her go because she wasn't a mermaid. He's immediately killed for his incompetence, and Redbeard orders his crew to put the mermaids on separate ships so that nothing goes wrong.
Redbeard appears again when Aphmau begins to unlock Katelyn's cage, hitting her over the head with the butt of his sword. He approaches with the two pirates that (unbeknownst to him) Aphmau befriended in "Get Away From Her!", and he starts to fight Aaron. Once Aaron is knocked to the ground, Redbeard also deflects an oncoming 'surprise' attack from Travis, mocking his efforts.
All of a sudden, he's stabbed by one of the other pirates in an act of mutiny to protect Aphmau and dies.

- Redbeard is the only other pirate captain in the series besides Garroth.
- His name is most likely in reference to Edward Teach (Blackbeard), whose nickname inspired a common naming convention for fictional pirates.
