Ryo Nakano is Aphmau's main love interest in Heart Point. He is a senior at Heart Point Academy, and is Nakano's older brother.

Biography[]

Ryo is first seen in "HEART POWERS ACTIVATE!", when Aphmau disappears to the roof to mope. He asks her to go mope somewhere else, since this is where he goes to ditch class. Aphmau accuses him of having done the graffiti on the wall behind him, which he denies, claiming it came from 'the generations of punk kids before him'. They go back and forth until Ryo decides he won't be getting his spot back, and starts to leave. He first asks for her name once he recognized that his younger sibling, Nakano, hangs out with her, but not caring enough to think on it more. He introduces himself and leaves, but not before he gains one heart with her.

He watches Aphmau's awkward kiss with Cyrus while he's getting ready to ditch class. She warns him that it's none of his business, but he warns her that rebounds never work- and he doesn't care if it isn't his business. They part ways, and Aphmau goes to class.

Sometime between when Theo escapes the escape room with Nakano, and when Aphmau gets back to her dorm, Ryo asks Theo to pass on an invitation to sneak out after curfew to Aphmau. She reluctantly accepts, showing up just in time to see him and Beatrice waiting. He takes them night swimming, wherein they break into the school's pool and goof around. Ryo is the only one who actually swims though, before they have a close call with a campus guard. He and Aphmau narrowly escape, having been left to fend for themselves by Beatrice, and share a short moment on the roof where they met. After being briefly interrupted by Beatrice, Ryo makes a move and asks her out. She declines, saying she's already trying things with Cyrus, which he understands and respects. He gains a heart and two stars with her regardless.

He comforts her after she breaks things off with Cyrus, reassuring her that she'll get through this because she's cute, and it can't be hard for her to find another guy. He asks if the position of rebound is still open, and Aphmau asks him out. This enrages Nakano, which Aphmau later tells him about, but he dismisses it. He tells her that he didn't think it'd bother "Naka-No fun" as much as it did, prompting Aph to make fun of the childhood nickname. Aphmau expresses that she feels a bit guilty, not wanting to ruin their sibling relationship, but Ryo assures her it'll be absolutely fine, and that they've been through worse.

Aphmau takes the chance to ask him to the prom, which he immediately laughs off.. and then properly declines. He sees it as a capitalistic ritual that enforces the idea of the nuclear family via prom royalty, and doesn't even own a tux. He also doesn't want to go because of what is later revealed to be social anxiety, though he doesn't express it. He asks if Aphmau is okay with not going, to which she says it is okay.

Ryo continues to ask her, wanting to be absolutely sure she's okay with not going to prom with him. He doesn't believe her, but she says yes every single time.

He's later found snooping on Beatrice and Aphmau's conversation, prompting the latter to run after him. He asks again if she's alright with not going to prom, and this time when she says she is, he completely doesn't believe her. She insists this time is different because Bea and Cass aren't going, but he's still doubtful. Aphmau tells him that she doesn't want to change who he is, and that she's just happy he likes her too. He retorts by saying that Beatrice was actually telling him that Aph was worried he would think she's silly.. which he does think she is, but it's something he very much enjoys about her.

Once she argues she's not silly, he tells her that if she's so serious now, then she won't mind him burning the two 'silly little prom tickets' he bought in an act of anti-establishmentism. He holds them high above her head until she admits she's silly, and then hands them over, telling her he loves her for her silliness. She immediately calls him out for saying it, and though he denies it, she claims she's going to get him next time he says it.

When prom finally comes, Ryo is overcome with anxiety to the point he almost ditches Aphmau. He pulls himself together, even though he's already hours later, and comes to pick her up from her dorm. He can't stop himself from seeming stiff and nervous, though, and doesn't even try to give an excuse- only says he's sorry. She dismisses it and just wants them both to have a good time tonight, so they leave together. On the way there, Ryo stops to tell Aphmau how beautiful she is, and though he's a bit scatterbrained, Aphmau's flattered and tries to get him excited for prom, too.

Once they arrive, he's still nervous, and leaves some time during Aphmau's conversation with Theo and Cyrus at the door. He escapes to the halls, nursing a panic attack against a locker. When Aph finds him, he tries to insist that he's fine and that she can just go back to her friends, but she persists. She figures out that he's anxious, no matter how hard he tries to hide it or pretend it's minor, and he reveals that his anxiety is why he ditches class. He says he almost ditched tonight, too, but he wanted to give Aphmau a great night since it meant so much to her. He feels as if he fails, but Aphmau stops him and suggests they just stay out here- after all, they can still hear the music from the gym.

Ryo and Aphmau dance in the hall together, ending in a kiss. The remaining empty hearts in his meter fill and turn gold, showing Aphmau has completely won his heart by staying with him. He's confused when Aphmau starts to freak out, but she explains she's only just won a game- and she pulls him in again, content.

Appearance[]

Ryo has gray hair and eyes, with a slit right eyebrow. He wears a forest green jacket over his uniform, with ripped jeans and checkered sneakers.

To the prom he wears a simple black tux, the jacket nearly fully open.

Personality[]

Ryo acts very aloof and disinterested. He's a bit of a troublemaker, as he's in the process of trespassing all the buildings on campus with Beatrice. He's very strongly against the establishment to the point Bea calls him an anarchist, though it's not clear if that's an ideology he truly holds. In "GAME OVER", it's revealed that he has problems with social anxiety that are the reason he ditches class so often, which may also be why he has his reserved, aloof 'bad boy' persona in the first place.
