Zane is a sentient crab and supporting character in Mermaid Tales.
Biography[]
Zane was summoned by Tavari and is a sentient sea creature just like the Sea Bun King.
Tavari explains in 'The Human World' that Zane is naturally very curious (as a scholar) and that if he gets out of hand, one can distract him with any shiny objects. As if on cue, Zane becomes fascinated with Aphmau since she's a mermaid, but so very different from Tavari, who throws gold pieces to get him under control. He goes to the surface with Aphmau on Tavari's orders after she drinks the transformation potion, sitting by her as she transforms on the beach- and becoming very interested when it goes off without a hitch. Unfortunately, Aaron dropkicks him back into the ocean, but he takes it as an opportunity to tell Tavari about what's happened.
He returns to Tavari and tells him the good news about the potion working, and he's ordered to quickly go back up and follow her- but not before he's given another potion to make her drink. When he finds Aphmau, he sees her and Aaron fighting, and watches from afar for a bit. He finally approaches to tell her that he can't understand merspeak, so he doesn't understand what she's saying. He gives her the potion to allow her to speak human language, hiding in her hair when Aaron comes back. He warns her not to let Aaron know she's a mermaid, or he'll gut her.
While Aaron is flustered over Aphmau sleeping beside him, Zane pinches the back of her neck with his claw to wake her, making her think Aaron did it. He again stops her from telling him she's a mermaid, and tries to feed her what she should say instead, but it ends up being more confusing. Aaron tries to check her head for injury, so Zane hops out and leaves. He secretly hides in the nearby plants, getting frustrated with how slow she is to get the human hair, and goes to report back to Tavari once more.
On his way back, he hums to himself when all of a sudden he's pulled by a fishing net. He finds himself caught by Ivan, though he's quickly thrown back into the water on impulse. He recognizes him as the human that chased Tavari back into the ocean (presumably when Lucinda was taken,) and quickly runs to report it.
He gets a bit lost, finding Katelyn and Teony being 'eaten' by the sea buns and their king. He tells the mermaids to simply.. stand up, which they do- escaping the sea buns' wrath. The Sea Bun King curses Zane for foiling their plan, and he's immediately insulted. They fight briefly, until the Sea Bun King throws a gold coin and distracts him. The Sea Bun King falls asleep, and Zane notices Katelyn's tiara, becoming distracted by it. Katelyn inadvertently reveals that she knows Aphmau, a fact Zane immediately realizes can be used to his and Tavari's advantage. He tells them he has a friend who can help them, and leads them towards Tavari.
While leading them to him, he's caught on Alfredo's fishing hook. He's nearly cooked until Aphmau stops it, saying she can't stand to see a sea creature harmed. When Prince Travis prepares to drop him back into the ocean, Teony leaps from it and pulls both him and the prince back under. He cuts Travis' hair with his claws and let him go. Zane finally manages to lead them to Tavari's grotto, telling the mermaids he can help with their new, unwanted scales. He brings more human hair and two mermaids to Tavari, pleasing him.
Zane insults Mariana in front of them, earning a scolding from Tavari. He seems to understand once he's told the plan: to steal Katelyn's sea crystal. Tavari gives him three potions to give to Aphmau: one to extend her transformation, one to extend her human speech, and another... to kill her, if she doesn't move along with what she's been told to do.
When Zane approaches Aph and Aaron, he sees Aphmau flopping around a cave after him, fully transformed into a mermaid. He assumes she captured him, telling her a brief fact about sirens before he moves on to asking about the hair. When she says she needs the human's help to get it, he gives her the first potion to allow her to speak to him. Aaron cuts his own hair to offer, but Zane quickly says it isn't enough. He gives Aphmau the transformation potion to drink so that she can go get more human hair.
Rather than going to the ship with Aaron and Aphmau, he takes Aaron's hair back to Tavari. He arrives just in time to see Katelyn and Teony suffocating and swimming out, and Tavari holding a sea crystal.
After Tavari is eaten by Titanus, Zane's allegiance changes towards an awakened Lucinda, and he asks what her plan is.
Appearance[]
Zane is a small black crab with a blue mouth piece. His eye stalks have sky blue eyes and angry eyebrows.
Personality[]
Zane is often curious due to being a scholar, and he wants to study the difference between a mermaid and merman. He is also obsessed with shiny things, and one can easily distract him by tossing something shiny in his path. Whenever he sees something shiny, he tends to shriek "SHINY!!!" and immediately pursue it. He's quite serious otherwise though, often getting annoyed when others are too stupid for his liking.

Trivia[]
- Zane has a fondness for shiny things and a desire to be gigantic, a reference to the character Tamatoa from Moana- a crab who also held these traits.
- On Kestin's (Zane's VA) YouTube channel KestinTheVoice, (formerly LucariosKlaw,) he sang a cover of the song 'Shiny' sung by the character.
- When he first appeared, his model had no animations. This was fixed in the next episode.
