Zenix is the secondary antagonist in Minecraft Diaries, once serving as a guard-in-training in Phoenix Drop as Garroth's apprentice. Zenix betrayed his village, revealing himself to be a Shadow Knight serving the Shadow Lord's intentions. Shortly thereafter, Zenix went mad and was proclaimed exiled after destroying and absorbing his own assigned squadron of Shadow Knights. After remaining dormant for fifteen years in the overworld, Zenix returned to the Nether and began his massacre on any and all Shadow Knights. Within three years, Zenix joined forces with Laurance, and they established their own rebellion squadron.

Biography

Early Life

Zenix's past remains shrouded in secrecy, despite retaining his human memories. Zenix only personally alludes to his past life once, recounting some vaguely familiar memory after witnessing the explosion of Visher. He became a shadow knight before or around the same time as Sasha. He was found beaten and badly wounded as a kid by Garroth, who gave him shelter and took him on as his knight apprentice. Zenix later secretly participated in the murder of Lord Malik in collaboration with Sasha, Gene, and Vylad. Of them, Vylad rescued the remaining members of Lord Malik's family from the fire. Zenix would abduct Malik's wife, Matilda, and keep her locked in a cell until he could find her son, Levin.

The Rise of Phoenix Drop

Upon Aphmau's arrival, he was one of the first people to greet her when she came to Phoenix Drop. He and Garroth are the first villagers to regain their memories, or rather, "become aware." Later on, when Garroth was finally getting over the disappearance of the old Lord, he assigned Zenix and Brendan to demolish the old lord's home in the forest. Vylad then tried to shoot an arrow at Zenix—only for Zenix to pull Brendan in front of him at the last second, resulting in Brendan being shot.

While Brendan recovered, Garroth and Zenix went into the forest to find the archer. Before Garroth could investigate a suspicious door, they found that it would later be revealed where Zenix had been holding Lord Burt. Zenix turned on Garroth and shot him in the chest with an arrow. He told Garroth it was the masked man, then left him there, disappearing for many episodes.

When Aphmau was seeking out Lord Burt, she entered the hideout and was attacked by Zenix. He attempted to kill her, but she knocked him unconscious during the battle. Before Aphmau could react, Vylad entered then disappeared with Zenix's body without explanation. Lord Burt explained that Zenix used a crystal to steal away his healing magicks in order to aid in resurrecting the Shadow Lord.

Much later, Aphmau came across a man in the forest who introduced himself as Elder Kain, a former lord whose village was burned down by Shadow Knights, who was actually just Zenix in disguise. Elder Kain gave Aphmau a Wyvern Portal Staff and instructed her to go to the Wyvern realm and collect sacred wood logs for him. However, when Aphmau returned with the news that she hadn't collected anything due to the Wyvern Elder telling her not to give it to Elder Kain, Zenix broke out of character in a fit of anger and attacked her. This is when Aphmau discovered that Zenix had become a Shadow Knight.

Zenix attacked Aphmau and attempted to kidnap her, but he was defeated by Kawaii~Chan's maids, and he disappeared once more, although Matilda revealed Zenix was the one keeping her prisoner in Scaleswind. When Aphmau returned to Phoenix Drop, Dale told her that Zenix had attacked the village in desperate search of Levin to use him in a ritual sacrifice and had destroyed most of the town. In the battle, he got into a clash with Garroth, which left Garroth's helmet badly damaged.

It was revealed over time by various characters that Zenix had ended up betraying the Shadow Lord by slaughtering the Shadow Knight army he was assigned, to obtain the Wyvern Portal Staff and went out on his own. This made him a traitor to both Phoenix Drop and the Shadow Knights. Gene said he regrets allowing Zenix to retain his human memories.

The War of the Magi

It was implied Zenix remained in the Overworld during the following fifteen years. Sasha came to Phoenix Drop, begging Aphmau for help since Zenix had gone completely mad, opened a portal, and had begun his reign of destruction through the Nether. He has been absorbing and killing armies of Shadow Knights singlehandedly. Opening the portal had allowed numerous Shadow Souls to escape and begin attacking villages all over Ru'aun. Amidst the chaos, Vylad was finally released from his prison cell and escaped through the portal.

While she was captured, Sasha revealed that Zenix had already been a Shadow Knight prior to the events of Season 1, before Garroth met him and even before Sasha became a Shadow Knight herself. She explained that Zenix didn't get along well with Gene during his time in the Nether and rivaled him for the position of leader of the army before he was exiled.

The Realm Protector

Zenix is mentioned again, allied with Laurance in a rebellion against Shad and his army of Shadow Knights. Their rebellion has been losing numbers and is expected to fall soon. He had a brief appearance during Episode 3, where he defeated Gene to rescue Laurance. In the rescue, Zenix destroyed a part of their own fortress. Zenix then wandered off for a nap after Laurance scolded him.

Zenix has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. In The Rise of Phoenix Drop, he wore a grey suit of armor, made out of metal and chainmail, with golden trim, and a mask covering half of his face.

The War of the Magi

Zenix appeared very briefly a full set of custom Shadow Knight armor, black with dark red plates. His helmet has details that sweep back sharply, and black bars projecting down over the middle and from the sides of his face, framing his deep red eyes. He holds a very large red and dark grey sword.

The Realm Protector

The rest of Zenix's face is revealed: he has messy dark reddish-brown hair that swoops back, and his eyes are deep red. His modern Shadow Knight armor has a less coherent design, mostly jet-black with sparse dark red detailing underneath.

Personality 

Zenix admits that he can't place his trust in anyone, as it was how he was raised. He seemed fairly innocent, had a strong sense to protect his villagers, cared about Aphmau, and could barely swing a sword or aim a bow, but it turned out that it was all a façade. Brendan considered the two of them great friends, and Garroth considered him like a son and held onto memorabilia long after his betrayal.

After his reveal to be a Shadow Knight, he turned out to be very manipulative and power-hungry, though this might be attributed to being a Shadow Knight rather than his true personality; as most characters comment that he has gone insane and lost control over his Shadow Knight-hood at the time of his reveal. Zenix held a great resentment towards Lords, believing guards always put their life on the line for them, while Lords very rarely sacrifice themselves. Sasha implied that Zenix is cruel, such as enjoying watching his victims suffer before killing them.

Zenix in season 3 appears to have a personality independent of his Shadow Knight nature that wasn't present before. He's cocky, confident, and disobedient, insisting he leads the rebellion as he chaotically sees fit. He begrudgingly respects Laurance's power over him and refuses to acknowledge when he's wrong. Zenix constantly aligns himself with fighting authority, seeking to place himself on top, as opposed to abolishing it.

Trivia

• Garroth had a great attachment to Zenix – too much, according to Laurance, commenting that Garroth put his whole heart and pride into his apprentice. Garroth refused to accept that Zenix gave in to becoming a Shadow Knight, holding onto items to remember him by, even considering him like a son, and declaring that something else had to be controlling Zenix. Garroth was heartbroken and blamed himself for creating this monster. It wasn't until Laurance and him fought outside of Malachi's castle that he gave up on Zenix and hardly mentioned him ever again.
• Despite Laurance showing little to no sympathy towards Garroth grieving over Zenix, Laurance and Zenix end up joining forces together later on.
• Laurance, in season 2, implies that Zenix had no control over his actions, either as he shot Garroth and attacked Phoenix Drop, or as he slaughtered fleets of Shadow Knights.
• It's possible that the village that Zenix disguised as Elder Kain described was one of the same villages he destroyed to find the Wyvern Portal Staff and where he slaughtered his own fleet. It's even possible that Elder Kain was the Lord, as he introduces himself as such.
• Though this fact about Shadow Knights can be easily disputed, Zenix was never shown to have red eyes until after he destroyed a village and slaughtered his Shadow Knight fleet to obtain a Wyvern Portal Staff, indicating perhaps neither murdering Lord Malik nor gravely injuring Garroth allowed him immortality. This is supported by Zenix stating he is unkillable.

• Zenix had a pet piglet named Sir Pigglesworth when he was disguised as Elder Kain in episode 33 and episode 35. When Zenix revealed himself, Sir Pigglesworth was also revealed to be an undead horse.
• Zenix's original skin comes from the collection of female guard skins in the Minecraft Comes Alive mod, despite being male. Zenix's skin from the modpack is labelled GuardF2.
  • Since the skin wore a full helmet that covers everything except the eyes, and parts of the face, no one could notice that the skin's head texture had an intended female appearance unless they looked into the mod's skin file. Aphmau might've noticed this early on because in the Season 1 thumbnails Zenix appears in, his skin doesn't use the same face texture as GuardF2. As of his appearance in Mystreet and Minecraft Diaries Season 2, they that the skin's head texture has completely changed aside from the colors.
